Alex Haley, the author of Roots, kept a picture in his office showing a turtle on top of a fence post. The picture was there to remind him of a lesson he learned long ago: if you see a turtle on a fence post, you know he had some help. According to Haley, "Any time I start thinking, 'Wow, look at what I've done,' I look at that picture and remember how this turtle (me) got up on that post."

The concluding verse of the Scripture text from which I preached this morning was Acts 4:31: "After they prayed, the place where they were meeting was shaken. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke the word of God boldly."
Imagine what our churches and cities would be like if that verse became a reality in our lives! Indeed, what might happen if we traded long hours of committee meetings for times of fervent prayer and heartfelt seeking of the Holy Spirit's infilling?
Acts 4:31 impresses on me the need to trade much of ordinary church "busy work" for some extraordinary times of praying and seeking a fresh infilling of the Spirit. I need some divine "shaking" in my life. How about you?
Come, Holy Spirit!
