THE SOLACE OF SOVEREIGNTY
Not long ago, a fine Christian brother commented to me that coming to terms with the sovereignty of God over all things (including salvation) was both liberating and lifechanging. (He was raised in an Arminian tradition and formerly embraced that theological system). For myself, the fact that God rules and reigns over everything, great and small, is very comforting.
As I prepare for a surgical procedure in less than two weeks, I am finding solace not only in the biblical truth of God's sovereignty, but also in the God who is sovereign over all. To be sure, my times--and all our times--are in God's hands (Psalm 31:15). The song I learned years ago as a child is certainly true: "He's Got the Whole World in His Hands."
As a college student, I read a work titled The Consolation of Philosophy. I thought then, as I do now, that it was strange for a Christian to find their consolation in philosophy. How much better to find one's solace in the sovereignty of the living God. And how much better still to find one's solace in the God who is sovereign over all, and in whose hands our times and very lives are held!
The God I love and serve is the sovereign Lord. He is the God who has made Himself known in Jesus Christ, in Whom we find true solace: abundant and eternal life. My consolation, both now and forever, is in the triune God--Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

Comments:
Having left a life-long Presbyterian tradition and becoming Southern Baptist, it was interesting to watch the reactions of the Baptists who "discover" God's Sovereignty for the first time. Our minister is reformed and those that were brought up with an Arminian theology get really excited about the idea that God is sovereign in salvation.

This releases them from the guilt of wrong theology. Guilt caused by the idea that they did not evangelize properly to the lost. That somehow it was their fault that that person was condemned to hell.

It has been interesting (and encouraging!)to see a growing number of Southern Baptists embracing Reformed theology. Are you familiar with the Founders movement within the SBC?
